Lighting
dare write, that axolotls are not particularly demanding as for light (needs no artificial lighting, natural daylight in the room is suitable – not too much sunlight). Their activity surges at twilight, i.e. at sunrise and sunset, as this is the time when they hunt for food at the wild. They avoid direct sunlight (unadvisable). General suggestion is to place the aquarium further from a window. There are two reasons for that.
1 No direct light falls on the tank and so the water does not heat up, which can be unpleasant for axolotls especially in summer months.
2 No green algae grow in the water.
My opinion is that axolotls don’t suffer too much even if there is lack of light. It is more likely that brown algae will appear in a weak light, but it won’t have any adverse effect on your pet’s health. Regular alternation of daylight and darkness is advisable, while the transition from dark to light should be gradual. Sudden change of illumination will stress your pets. They instinctively rush for shelter and hide but they might get injured while doing so. Frequent stress leaves them vulnerable to diseases and has an adverse impact on their lifespan. Here I must make it clear, that I don’t advise to keep the axolotls in darkness. Try to create such light conditions they would have had in their natural environment. Keep in mind that adequate lighting stimulates their activity and searching for food.
