Limb Regeneration - Cannibalism
Once in a while you may bring an axolotl from the Petshop that has an injured limb, or even entirely bitten off. This is a consequence of their feeding appetence in the aquariums where there are several dozens of them kept together at once. Axolotl asserts its prey with a fling and so it may accidentally bite off or injure another’s limb. Such limb fully re-grows within 3 to 6 weeks and it is wholly functional. There’s no need to worry, it is all right, perfectly within the nature’s intentions. However, I would not recommend keeping axolotls of different size in one tank, because they attack and eat any living creature that would fit their mouth and so cannibalism may occur. Sometimes it happened to me, when breeding young axolotls in one tank, I found one or even more grownups (up to 4 inches bigger) hidden behind the filter. Its respectable size was the consequence of eating up several dozens of its siblings.
